The Hy-Vee Story

In 1930, Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small general store in Beaconsfield, Iowa. That store grew to become Hy-Vee — a company with more than 570 business units across nine Midwestern states and sales of more than $13 billion annually. Today, Hy-Vee is synonymous with quality, variety, convenience, healthy lifestyles, culinary expertise and superior customer service.

As an employee-owned company, Hy-Vee encourages each of its more than 75,000 employees to help guide the company. Hy-Vee's nearly 95 years of outstanding success is a testament to those employees' hard work and dedication to the vision of its founders. Employee Ownership

Hy-Vee is employee-owned by direct stockholders — officers, district store directors and executive staff members — and indirect stockholders, the more than 45,000 Hy-Vee employees who participate in The Hy-Vee and Affiliates 401(k) Plan. A portion of the matching contributions made by the company to The Hy-Vee and Affiliates 401(k) Plan is directed to the Hy-Vee Stock Fund. This account is the largest shareholder in the company. Every employee is a stakeholder in the company's future and takes pride and ownership in the company’s autonomous culture.
