FAIRFIELD, Iowa (June 22, 2018) — Today, Hy-Vee, Inc. presented the Rotary Club of Fairfield, Iowa, with a check for $41,303 to help establish a well project in Jaluke, Nepal, which will bring clean water to thousands of people as that area’s population continues to grow.

The funding comes from the Hy-Vee One Step Program, which uses a portion of the proceeds from the sale of earth-friendly, everyday products to benefit local and worldwide charitable causes. Hy-Vee’s gift, which comes from its Hy-Vee bottled water sales, will be matched at 50 cents on the dollar by The Rotary Foundation. The well project is being overseen by an international partnership with the Rotary Club of Narayani Mid Town in Nepal.

“Hy-Vee aims to help with meaningful projects in our communities and beyond,” said Fairfield Hy-Vee Store Director Lindsey Flanigan. “This partnership is a terrific way for Iowans to help bring safe, sufficient drinking water to a community that can greatly benefit from the well, its distribution system and the public bathrooms the project will help provide.”

Doug Flournoy, a member of the Rotary Club of Fairfield who wrote the grant for the project, said Hy-Vee is helping not only to meet a humanitarian need, but also build better relationships with countries across the world.

“I’m grateful to Hy-Vee for providing this opportunity for funding, and to work on a project like this in a community where people do not have clean water, which is such a fundamental need,” said Flournoy. “If you can make water available, then health care and education often follow.”

Flournoy said the well will replace an existing water supply pipeline that is old, damaged and unreliable. It also will help meet the need of a population that’s expected to grow from about 10,000 to 14,000 people by 2027. The Jaluke project, which includes two bore holes, pumps and a 400,000-liter storage tank, is expected to be completed over the next year. You can learn more about the project here.
