West Des Moines, IA — Officials with Hy-Vee Inc. have announced the purchase of the former Econofoods property at 1200 W. Burlington Ave. in Fairfield and the company’s intent to build a new Hy-Vee supermarket on the site.
Ken Waller, Hy-Vee executive vice president, said the new store will be substantially larger than the current one and will offer more products and services to customers in the Fairfield area.
“We’ve been looking for a larger site in Fairfield for awhile, and this location is ideal,” Waller said. “We are excited to build a 21st-century store for our customers in the Fairfield area.”
Fairfield Hy-Vee Store Director Randy Menke said customers played a large role in the company’s decision to build a larger store. “We have the best customer base in southeast Iowa. Our current store is only 36,000 square feet, small in comparison to other stores shoppers could travel to. But for more than half a century, they have remained loyal to Hy-Vee. This is our thank-you to them.”
Site plans for the new store have not been developed yet, but it is expected to be approximately 60,000 square feet. In addition to expanding the produce, meat, frozen foods and dairy departments, the store is expected to feature a food court, HealthMarket, pharmacy, wine and spirits, a floral shop, one-hour and digital photo, and an array of customer services.
Two other tenants on the site must vacate before construction can begin, tentatively scheduled for fall 2008. Plans are to demolish the existing structure and build from the ground up.
