Media Reports: Apple Juice

September 14, 2011 | News & Press Releases

You may have heard some recent TV reports regarding the safety and security of apple juice. At Hy-Vee, the safety of the products sold in our stores is our highest priority, so we wanted to share facts and correct misinformation reported in the media. You expect a safe food supply, and today’s food and beverage industry is dedicated to delivering safe and affordable food to the stores you trust.

What’s the Truth about Arsenic?

  • Arsenic exists naturally in the environment and enters from both natural and man-made sources.
  • Trace levels of naturally occurring elements such as arsenic are present at extremely low levels in many foods and beverages including apple juice.

What is being done to assure the safety of apple juice?

  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been testing arsenic levels in juices for many years. The FDA has issued a Consumer Update regarding apple juice, as well as a Question & Answer page on the subject of arsenic levels in apple juice. It is important to note that the FDA finds NO PUBLIC HEALTH RISK associated with the consumption of apple juice.
  • The Juice Products Association (JPA) has issued an Official Statement on the safety of apple juice, as well as a Q&A for consumers regarding apple juice safety.
  • The International Food Information Council, an independent, non-profit organization, also has a Q&A about arsenic in food and beverages.

As Americans, we enjoy one of the safest, most abundant and most affordable food supplies in the world.
