6th Street Hy-Vee in Lawrence to Close to the Public on Nov. 3

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Sept. 12, 2019) — Hy-Vee, Inc. officials announced today that the 6th Street Hy-Vee, located at 4000 West Sixth Street in Lawrence, will close to the public on Nov. 3, 2019. The convenience store at this location will remain open.
The 6th Street Hy-Vee grocery store will permanently close at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3. The grocery store’s 221 full- and part-time employees will have the opportunity to transition to positions at other Hy-Vee stores in the Lawrence and Kansas City area as well as Hy-Vee’s new Kansas City Aisles Online fulfillment center.
Hy-Vee opened the 6th Street Hy-Vee in 2000. Hy-Vee is closing the location because it has not met sales expectations for many years and the space no longer reflects the current brand standard and amenities Hy-Vee strives to offer customers. Due to the store’s sales performance history, Hy-Vee will not be investing further in the location.
“The 6th Street Hy-Vee has served as a local grocery store for many nearby residents for a number of years, and we understand it will be missed by its customers,” said Frank Woodward, senior vice president, Hy-Vee’s western region. “It’s always difficult when we make store adjustments, but we must keep pace with customers’ shopping behaviors and meet their needs through excellent customer service and more modern amenities.”
“Hy-Vee remains committed to the Lawrence community,” said Woodward. “We also will continue to invest in our Clinton Parkway Hy-Vee store in Lawrence.”
Employees at the 6th Street Hy-Vee were notified this morning about its permanent closure. Customers will be notified verbally and by signage posted throughout the store. Pharmacy customers will receive a letter informing them that their prescriptions will be transferred to the Clinton Parkway Hy-Vee, located at 3504 Clinton Parkway in Lawrence, or another pharmacy of their choosing.
Hy-Vee owns and will maintain the property as it looks for a new tenant for the grocery store space.
